How to check command belongs to which package

In Ubuntu, to check a command belongs to which package, type:

# dpkg -S iwconfig
wireless-tools: /usr/share/man/cs/man8/iwconfig.8.gz
wireless-tools: /usr/share/man/fr/man8/iwconfig.8.gz
wireless-tools: /usr/share/man/man8/iwconfig.8.gz
wireless-tools: /sbin/iwconfig

The output shows iwconfig belongs to the wireless-tools package. The -S option means to search. A very simple but useful command.

Other useful options are

dpkg -L packagename – will list all the files associated with the package

dpkg -l packagename – will list just the version, description and status

dpkg -s packagename – will state the status

dpkg -S filename-search-pattern
